Below is a list of recent updates made to the website.
July 26, 2020
- The Rails in Virginia website is back online. The
old domain name expired in March. I have brought the site back
under the new domain of
www.railsinva.com. If you notice any missing or bad links,
please send me an e-mail at

August 29, 2015
- Added five new photos to the
N&W
Signs & Markers page. The new additions include the
sub-division sign, station one mile sign, yard limit sign, stop sign,
slow sign and
right of way monument. Thanks to Larry Evans and Kevin Simpson for
their contributions.
April 19, 2015
- Add two new pages to the Atlantic Coast Line section of
the Abandoned Rails page. One is called
ACL Locomotive Repair Shops in the Early CSX Era and features
photographs taken around the Rocky Mount, NC diesel shops in the
mid-1980's. The second one is
ACL Emerson Shops - Passenger Car Facility and shows the remnants of
the ACL's passenger car shops in Rocky Mount. All photos for both
pages were contributed by Brian Ezzelle.
- A JPG thumbnail and PDF of the bulletin announcing the
closure of the Wilson, NC agency office for CSX has been added to the
page

- Many new photos have been added to the
Norlina Subdivision page thanks to recent contributions. A
list of defect detectors and radio stations have also been added.
Additional photos will be published in the near future as they are
received.

- Updated the
CSX South End
Subdivision railfan guide to reflect the removal of the South Wilson
and Wilson-NS interlockings, and the addition of the Wilson
interlocking.

- Added a new book, Virginian Railway Heritage Trail, to

March 29, 2013
- Added the
N&W Pocahontas Branch page to the Abandoned Rails section.
This feature contains a brief history and overview of the Pocahontas
Branch along with modern day photos and a map.

- Added the
Central Virginia Railroad Locations page. This examines the
history and background of many Central Virginia railroad facility,
interlock and signal names.
February 18, 2013
- Updated the CSX James River Subdivision
railfan guide
with recent changes to several defect detectors.
December 6, 2012
- Added a photo of the Virginian Railway searchlight signal
at Weyanoke, WV to the
Fallen Virginian Signals page. The signals at Weyanoke were
recently replaced.

Elm City to the

These signals were recently removed from service.

- Updated the railfan guide for the
CSX
James River Subdivision to reflect the changes that occurred with
the recent signal upgrades. Many signals were relocated and some
were removed altogether.

Commonwealth, has been added to the resources page for
books.
July 21, 2012
- Added two photos of the N&W CPL signals at Portlock to the
NS Virginia Division Signals page. These
signals were recently removed from service.

- Added two photos (circa 1970) from Algren, VA to the
Virginian Railway - First Subdivision page showing the former SAL/VGN
diamond.

- Most of the CSX railfan guides were updated to reflect
current train symbols and days of operation for intermodal and manifest
trains.

CSX North End Subdivision to reflect the removal of the Bootlegger's
Crossing and BX signals in Petersburg, VA.

- The
resources
section has been reorganized with various media receiving it's own
dedicated page. Also the
books
have been categorized by railroad for easier browsing.
September 17, 2011
-All of the CSX
railfan
guides have been updated to reflect the new routing and symbols for
the Q130 and former Q170 series intermodal trains that travel through Virginia.
All Q170 trains have been renumbered into the Q030 series. These
changes were effective August 3, 2011.
August 15, 2011
-A page has been created to showcase the fallen C&O
signals on the CSX Alleghany Subdivision. Work has been ongoing
for the past year. Crews started in Clifton Forge and are working
westward. New signals have now been installed between JD Cabin and
OX Cabin. Click

Abilene has been added. This photo, courtesy of Tommy Warshaw, can

January 23, 2011
-The N&W's Old Mainline via Farmville is highlighted
on this newly created
page containing a brief history, overview, and photographs.
-Thanks to the generosity of Mr. Bill Volkmer, I have
added several of his photos taken along the N&W's Bluestone Branch.
These images were shot during an excursion in conjunction with the 1957
NRHS Convention held in Roanoke. Click
